re Mariposa Basin Trail Becoming a Bicycle Trail - BE SURE TO DO THE SURVEY!!!

Hi Equestrian Neighbor,

The trail on the south side of the LA River that runs between the Riverside/Victory Bridge and Tunnel 7 is known as the Mariposa Basin Trail.  This has historically been an equestrian trail.  However, the City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) is apparently considering making that portion of the Mariposa Basin Trail between the Riverside/Victory Bridge and the Forest Lawn on and off ramps of the freeway, just east of Tunnel 7, a bicycle trail.  The official name of this project is LADOT LA Riverway Phase IV Extension.

LADOT's proposals include:  A Bike and Pedestrian path with separated and level Equestrian Path; a Bike and Pedestrian Path with separated elevated Equestrian path; and a Standalone bike and pedestrian path (no equestrians).

You may access their complete website for this project at: https://ladotlivablestreets.org/projects/LA-Riverway-Phase-IV

I have attached their "Fact Sheet" which includes a map and diagrams of their proposals.  As you will see from the map, the end of the proposed bike trail is at the double chain-link gates viewable from the Perimeter trail of the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, east of the Mariposa Bridge and Tunnel 7.

It is, of course, remarkable that the proposed bike trail will go past Tunnel 6 (posted "No bicycles").  It is also remarkable that the proposal puts the bikers on the same path as pedestrians.  Then of course there is the proposal that elevates the bikers and the pedestrians above and alongside the horses.

Here are the ways the public may participate:

An in-person workshop on Thursday, May 18, from 5-7 pm at Friendship Auditorium (3201 Riverside Drive, Los Angeles, 90027;
A virtual zoom meeting on Thursday, June 1, from 6-7 pm; and
Complete their online survey.  (FYI - The survey questions are pretty good, and many questions provide a small opportunity to state your opinion in your own words.)

I don't see a general email option for public comment on the website, other than in the "Contact Us" tab, and it looks like the character count may be limited.

I would expect that the bicyclists will be out in force at the meetings.

Take care,
Nori

REMINDER: THE ONLY LEGAL PATHS FOR BICYCLES TO BE ON IN GRIFFITH PARK ARE THE BIKE PATHS ON ZOO DRIVE,  FOREST LAWN DR. AND GRIFFITH PARK DR. NO BICYCLE IS ALLOWED ON ANY DIRT PATH OR MAINTENANCE ROAD IN THE PARK.
THE BRIDLE PATH (which was paved in the late 1980s for maintenance trucks) THAT GOES FROM THE EQUESTRIAN BRIDGE TO TUNNEL 6 AND ON TO VICTORY IS NOT A LEGAL BIKE PATH.
IF YOU SEE A BICYCLE BEING RIDDEN, PUSHED, CARRIED, ETC. ON ANY BRIDLE TRAIL LET THE PARK RANGERS KNOW EVEN IT THERE'S NO WAY THEY CAN GET THERE - WE NEED A PAPER TRAIL TO LET THEM KNOW HOW MANY BICYCLISTS ARE BREAKING THE LAW. 323-644-6661

IF YOU SEE A BICYCLE ON THE EQUESTRIAN BRIDGE, THAT IS THE BURBANK POLICE'S JURISDICTION.
